Strew started with a real home education problem.
Strew originally began as something I made with and for my sister, Kayley, while she was home educating.
There was learning everywhere: days out, projects, books, conversations, practical skills and all the ordinary things that make home education what it is. The difficult bit was keeping a useful record of it without turning family life into a paperwork exercise.
Photos ended up in camera rolls. Activities were remembered later. Notes lived in different places. Then, when you actually wanted to look back over everything or put together a report, there was a lot of reconstructing to do.
I’m Woody, and I build software, so the obvious question was: could an app make that part disappear?
That became Strew.
Strew is now primarily a solo project, with me leading its development and day-to-day direction. Kayley still provides feedback, ideas and an important home educator’s perspective.
That original problem is still what guides the product: help families record the education that is already happening, rather than giving them another system to manage.
The ideas behind Strew matter as much as what it does.
Strew is deliberately not trying to recreate a school management system on your phone.
Learning does not only happen at a desk
A museum visit, building something, cooking a meal, reading a novel or becoming fascinated by insects can all contain meaningful learning. A record-keeping tool should be able to reflect that.
Recording learning should not become the work
If documenting an activity takes longer than the activity itself, something has gone wrong. Strew is built around capturing useful information quickly and getting back to real life.
Families should own the story of their education
A learning record can be useful for reflection, reassurance, remembering milestones and, when needed, explaining the education being provided to somebody else.
There is no single correct way to home educate
Some families follow a structured curriculum. Others are child-led, project-led, eclectic or unschooling. Strew is intended to sit underneath those choices rather than dictate them.
AI should reduce admin, not direct childhood
Strew uses AI where it can make repetitive tasks easier, such as helping identify learning or summarise records. It is an assistant to the parent, not a replacement for parental judgement.
Useful software can still be small and human
Strew is independently built rather than run by a large education company. That means the distance between customer feedback and the person changing the product is unusually short.

Tools such as Homeschool Planet and Homeschool Manager put significant emphasis on calendars, schedules, assignments, grades and attendance. Strew is primarily designed around capturing the learning that actually took place and making that record useful afterwards.

Strew is available on iPhone, iPad and Android. That matters because much of home education happens away from a desk, and recording something while it is fresh is easier than reconstructing it at the end of the week.

Reports grow out of the record
The activity log is the source material for a Strew report. Families can build a record gradually, then create a summary from what is already there instead of starting again with a blank document.
